How it started…

No stranger to philanthropy, Mr Salleh Marican has been donating to various causes in his personal capacity for over 40 years. Being a well known patron of a number of local charitable organisations, he strongly believes that those in the position to do so, should assist others in need.

Whilst serving for over 10 years on the Board of Temasek Foundation Cares as a founding member, Mr Salleh realised that even in an affluent country like Singapore, many fall through the cracks of society and are in need of assistance. What more in underdeveloped countries.

The realisation kindled in him, a need to give back in a bigger way.

This led him to start the Salleh Marican Foundation, with the intention to donate a total sum of $100 million to support select causes in Singapore and other countries.

In the early years of his struggles to establish his business, he kept himself going by aspiring to drive a Jaguar car and living in a big house on Nassim Road, the most prestigious neighbourhood in Singapore.

When his businesses became more successful, he bought himself a Jaguar XJ6 and drove it for 20 years. However, when he got into the position to own a landed property on Nassim Road, it somehow did not matter to him any longer.

And so, when a property broker, some time in 2019, sent him a video of a $100 million dollar house, he pondered over it and kept thinking if the same money could be put to better use. He forwarded the video to his family chat group and asked  if it was better to buy this house or to donate the $100 million dollars.

To his delight, his wife and family chose to donate the money to charity.

This led him to start the Salleh Marican Foundation, with the intention to donate a total sum of $100 million to support select causes in Singapore and other countries.

“The desire for wealth is nearly universal, and none can say it is not laudable, provided the possessor of it accepts its responsibilities, and uses it as a friend to humanity.”
